DoxyPEP (doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emerging and highly effective strategy for reducing the risk of certain sexually transmitted infections after potential exposure. At SHAE Medical Aesthetics, we are at the forefront of sexual health prevention and can help determine if DoxyPEP is right for you.
What Is DoxyPEP?
DoxyPEP involves taking a single dose of doxycycline (an antibiotic) within 72 hours of unprotected sex to reduce the risk of acquiring chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Recent clinical trials have shown DoxyPEP can reduce the risk of bacterial STIs by up to 87% in high-risk individuals.
Who May Benefit from DoxyPEP?
- Individuals who are sexually active and at higher risk for STIs
- Those who have had a prior STI diagnosis
- People who have inconsistent condom use
- Individuals on HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) seeking additional protection
How It Works
- Take 200 mg of doxycycline by mouth within 72 hours of potential exposure
- Take no more than once every 24 hours
- Not a replacement for regular STI testing or condom use
Important Considerations
DoxyPEP is not appropriate for everyone. Our providers will review your health history, current medications, and risk factors before prescribing. We will also discuss proper use, potential side effects, and the importance of ongoing STI screening as part of your sexual health plan.
